Do No Harm Pitch Deck

Project Overview

In the Fall of 2022, I took a Gamification and Game-based Learning class. As part of the course requirements, I created a game pitch deck to share my ideas for the prototype. The workplace related content I chose to focus on a game for medical doctors.

Project Summary
Approximately 400,000 people die prematurely each year due to preventable harm. Research shows that with open report and honest evaluation , these errors could be spotted, and reforms put in place to prevent them from happening again but all too often, they aren't.
The result is that lots of opportunities to learn are lost.
'Do No Harm is designed to foster a culture where learners can learn from their mistakes instead of feeling threatened by them. The game provides a unique opportunity for medical organizations to radically reimagine failure.

My Development Process and Design Decisions

After, I came up with my idea, I began preliminary research and putting my thoughts on paper.
Creating the pitch deck provided the opportunity for me to streamline my thoughts around the game. I struggled with being definitive about my audience as I wondered which doctors to focus on (new trainees, veterans or a mix) and what kind of doctors to focus on. I also wondered what type of preventable harm to focus on. I resolved to taking notes on my ideas and making decisions after gaining more clarity.

Why Game-based or Gamified Learning.

When used wisely in tandem with scientific principles of repeated retrieval and space repetition, gamification can bring about the desired behavioral change effectively. (Pandey, 2016).
In addition, within a gamified environment, individuals demonstrated a willingness to engage in repetitive tasks, experience failure and make repeated attempts despite the risk consequently improving work performance. (Larson, 2020).

A game-based learning environment where doctors can apply their skills to correctly diagnose an ailment, and reflect on their errors will help them improve their workplace performance.

The Pitch Deck

In this video, I share my ideas for developing a prototype, my theoretical framework, learning outcomes, game description and developmental details.

Conclusion
I went on to develop the prototype of for this game alongside a game design document. I received valuable feedback and will be incorporating the changes. I expect that the revised prototype will be ready by the end of Spring 2023.

Reflection
I thought I had things all figured out after creating the pitch deck. I wasn't prepared for the radical shift from my initial ideas as I developed the prototype! I am excited to see how this game will continue to evolve as I learn, design, develop, receive and incorporate feedback.

I worked within a very short time frame to develop this project from concept to prototype and there wasn't much I could do about it since it started out as a graduate school project. If this where a real world project, I would of necessity spend a lot more time on the analysis phase so as to prevent scope creep. The upside however of the short time frame was that I was able to come up with a minimum viable product that I can iterate upon.
